Visa is linking its settlement network with onchain lending infrastructure, creating a new way for stablecoin-linked card programs to access working capital and potentially extending blockchain-based lending beyond crypto markets into everyday payment settlement.

The payments company announced that settlement information from VisaNet will be combined with blockchain-based lending systems. This will allow lenders to use Visa settlement records alongside onchain transaction data when assessing borrowers and financing their payment obligations.

Visa connects payment settlement with onchain lending

Visa highlighted Credit Coop, a blockchain-based lending protocol that provides credit lines to businesses, as an early example of how the model can operate. Since 2023, Credit Coop has financed more than $2.5 billion in cumulative settlement volume across participating facilities. That activity has involved more than 3,000 borrowing events and 9,000 repayments.

Rubail Birwadker, Visa’s global head of growth products and partnerships, said stablecoins are “changing how money moves” and opening opportunities to reconsider the financial infrastructure behind payments. The initiative comes as Visa records significant growth across its stablecoin-related payment business.

More than 160 stablecoin-linked card programs now operate on the company’s network, with payment volume increasing nearly 200% year over year. Visa also said its stablecoin settlement volume has exceeded a $20 billion annualized run rate, more than 15 times its level a year earlier.

Visa expands its stablecoin strategy

Stablecoins have become an increasingly important part of Visa’s broader payments strategy. During the company’s fiscal third-quarter earnings call in July, management said Visa is “investing in each layer of the stablecoin stack,” covering areas including blockchains, wallets, infrastructure and applications.

The company has also joined the OpenStandard consortium, which plans to issue the OpenUSD stablecoin and includes Stripe among more than 140 participating businesses.

Stablecoin transaction bolumes continue to grow

Visa’s expansion into onchain lending comes alongside continued growth in stablecoin activity across the wider market. Adjusted stablecoin transaction volume reached a record $1.79 trillion in June. Over the latest 30-day period, transaction volume stood at approximately $1.2 trillion, according to Visa’s analytics dashboard.

The combination of stablecoin settlement and onchain credit infrastructure could further connect blockchain-based financial services with traditional payment networks as adoption continues to expand.
