TETHER Q3 2026
Tether reported $1.5 billion in operating profit for the third quarter of 2026, while its excess reserves increased to nearly $8 billion, according to financial figures published alongside its latest attestation prepared by independent accounting firm BDO.

The stablecoin issuer disclosed total assets of $191.5 billion and liabilities of $183.5 billion as of the end of September, resulting in a reserve surplus of $7.95 billion. This represents a substantial increase from the $4.1 billion in excess reserves reported at the end of June, reflecting a stronger financial buffer supporting the company's operations and stablecoin obligations.

Tether's reserve surplus nearly doubles to $7.95 billion

Tether's latest financial disclosure shows that US government debt remains a major component of the assets backing its stablecoin operations. As of Sept. 30, the company held approximately $132.4 billion in direct and indirect US Treasury bill exposure.

That amount is comparable to South Korea's $134.2 billion in US government debt holdings and exceeds the United Arab Emirates' $116.1 billion, according to August figures from the US Treasury Department.

The comparison illustrates the scale of Tether's exposure to US government securities, which have become an important source of income for the company. During the first nine months of 2026, Tether generated approximately $4.5 billion in net operating profit, with earnings primarily supported by returns from US Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements.

The company also reported an increase in the value of its Bitcoin holdings. At the end of September, Tether's Bitcoin reserves were valued at approximately $8.37 billion, compared with around $5.8 billion at the end of June. Together, these figures demonstrate the company's continued accumulation of reserve assets and the growing financial resources supporting its stablecoin business.

USDT maintains leadership as adoption expands in emerging markets

Tether's USDT remains the largest stablecoin by circulating market capitalization, maintaining a substantial lead over competing digital dollar tokens. According to DefiLlama, USDT accounts for approximately 60% of the global stablecoin market, which was valued at around $297.3 billion.

The stablecoin's widespread adoption has helped establish Tether as a major participant in the digital asset industry, particularly in markets where demand for US dollar-denominated financial products remains strong. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino announced on X that USDT's user base had surpassed 700 million.

Ardoino indicated that much of this adoption was concentrated in emerging economies, where stablecoins are increasingly used for savings, transfers and access to US dollar-denominated assets. The company's expanding user base and substantial reserve holdings reflect the growing role of stablecoins in international financial activity.

Tether's profitability also highlights the importance of interest-bearing reserve assets to the business models of major stablecoin issuers. By holding significant amounts of short-term US government securities, Tether generates income from assets maintained to support its outstanding stablecoin liabilities.

Reserve transparency remains a focus for Tether

Despite its financial growth, Tether has faced persistent questions regarding the transparency and independent verification of its reserves. The company has regularly published reserve attestations, including its latest report prepared by BDO, to provide information about the assets and liabilities associated with its stablecoin operations.

However, attestations differ from full financial statement audits, which generally involve a broader examination of a company's financial position and reporting practices. In August, Tether announced that KPMG US had completed its first comprehensive independent financial statement audit.

The company described the engagement as a significant milestone in its financial reporting efforts. Nevertheless, the audited financial statements were not publicly released, leaving external observers without access to the full findings.

The latest quarterly figures indicate that Tether continues to generate substantial profits while increasing its reserve surplus and maintaining its leading position in the global stablecoin market. At the same time, public access to comprehensive audited financial information remains an important consideration as the company's financial exposure and international user base continue to expand.
