Nike Teases Airphoria NFT Sneakers on Fortnite

Nike has teased the possibility of releasing a collection of sneakers nonfungible tokens (NFTs) within the popular online game Fortnite, signalling a potential opportunity for Web3 adoption among traditional gamers. Fortnite boasts a staggering number of active players, with over 242.9 million in the past 30 days.

Nike made the announcement on June 16 through its social media channels stating that the "ultimate Sneakerhunt" would commence on June 20. A short video accompanying the announcement showcases the Air Max logos of both Fortnite and Nike, set against a backdrop of floating clouds in the sky. The video then reveals the name of the sneaker hunt, "Airphoria" and concludes by featuring Nike's Web3 platform logo, .Swoosh, alongside Epic Games' Unreal Engine logo.

Specific details are currently limited, but members of the NFT community have speculated that Nike may have utilized Fortnite Creative 2.0; a feature which allows users to create virtual game maps using Fortnite assets to develop an NFT-related game. A Twitter user pointed out the similarity between Fortnite Creative 2.0 and game creation platforms like ROBLOX, suggesting that Nike may have leveraged this mode to create a game.

While it remains unconfirmed whether NFTs will be involved in Airphoria, the involvement of Nike's .Swoosh platform and Epic Games' favourable stance on NFT gaming indicate the possibility. Nike's NFT unit has been actively seeking to enter the traditional gaming space, with recent integration plans for its NFTs into games developed by EA Sports.
