Ireland’s Department of Finance has outlined plans for a new tax-advantaged investment account designed to encourage greater participation from retail investors. However, cryptocurrencies will not qualify for the preferential framework, reflecting the country’s continued cautious stance toward digital assets

In the roadmap, the department said eligible investments will include stocks, bonds, exchange-traded funds and other investment funds. Crypto assets and derivatives will remain outside the scheme, with the government describing them as “highly complex and risky” products.

New investment cccounts coming in 2027

The new accounts are expected to become available to Irish residents next year, although the government has not yet announced a specific launch date. Details regarding the applicable tax rate and any tax-free threshold are also still pending and are expected to be revealed as part of Ireland’s Budget 2027. The initiative is intended to simplify retail investing while providing Irish residents with more favorable tax treatment for eligible financial products.

Crypto excluded from tax benefits

By excluding cryptocurrencies, the government is keeping digital assets outside a framework specifically designed to make investing more accessible and tax-efficient. The decision places crypto alongside derivatives among the products that will not qualify for the new account’s benefits.

Ireland strengthens crypto oversight

The exclusion also comes as Ireland increases its regulatory focus on the cryptocurrency sector. Authorities have been working on reforms aimed at strengthening Anti-Money Laundering requirements for crypto businesses, forming part of a broader effort to increase oversight of digital asset activity in the country.
