According to a report from local news outlet EDaily, Jeonbuk Bank has become South Korea's first commercial bank to accept Bitcoin (BTC) as collateral for loans denominated in the Korean won. The service is reportedly available exclusively to businesses seeking working capital, allowing eligible corporate borrowers to access financing by pledging Bitcoin as collateral rather than selling their cryptocurrency holdings.
Under the reported lending arrangement, Bitcoin pledged by borrowers is held by a specialized digital asset custodian rather than directly by Jeonbuk Bank. The structure allows businesses to use their cryptocurrency holdings to secure traditional financing while keeping the collateral under the management of a dedicated custody provider.
According to EDaily, the bank has also implemented a mechanism for recovering outstanding loan balances through the proceeds of cryptocurrency sales, without requiring the institution to take direct possession of the underlying Bitcoin. The development could provide an additional financing option for South Korean companies holding digital assets, although the service is currently limited to corporate borrowers.
The introduction of Bitcoin-backed lending follows amendments to South Korea's Civil Enforcement Rules, which took effect on Oct. 1. According to the country's Supreme Court, the revised regulations establish procedures for the seizure and liquidation of claims involving virtual assets.
The framework provides a legal mechanism through which creditors can recover outstanding debts using cryptocurrency-related claims. In cases where borrowers fail to meet their repayment obligations, Jeonbuk Bank can reportedly recover funds through court-ordered sales of the pledged digital assets. These legal changes have created a clearer enforcement process for cryptocurrency-backed lending arrangements, potentially making digital assets more practical as collateral within the traditional banking system.
Despite reports that the service is already operational, Jeonbuk Bank has not publicly disclosed several important details about its Bitcoin-backed lending product. Information regarding loan sizes, interest rates and loan-to-value requirements remains unavailable.
A bank representative reportedly confirmed to local publication Chosun that Jeonbuk Bank had already issued a loan under the arrangement but declined to identify the borrower. The reported launch represents an early example of cryptocurrency being incorporated into conventional corporate lending in South Korea. However, the extent of future adoption will depend on the product's lending conditions, regulatory requirements and demand from businesses seeking financing against their digital asset holdings.
