Strategy CEO Phong Le said the company expects to resume increasing its Bitcoin holdings later this year, despite recently selling portions of its BTC as shifting business priorities attracted market attention. Speaking in a Monday interview with FOX Business, Le said Strategy has purchased approximately 175,000 Bitcoin since the start of the year while selling around 7,000 BTC, leaving the company firmly positioned as a net buyer.

That represents “about 25 times more” Bitcoin purchased than sold, according to Le. He also said Strategy has moved from being the world’s second-largest institutional Bitcoin holder to the largest. “We’ll get back to buying more Bitcoin throughout the course of the year,” Le said.

Strategy balances Bitcoin with shareholder obligations

Strategy has accumulated more than 840,000 BTC but has sold Bitcoin on four occasions since May. Its latest sale involved 1,690 BTC. Proceeds from the recent sales have been used to fund preferred stock dividends, share repurchases and the company’s US dollar reserve.

Although the amount sold remains relatively small compared with Strategy’s overall Bitcoin holdings, the transactions have attracted scrutiny because they represent a departure from the company’s long-standing “never sell” approach to Bitcoin. The change reflects the competing financial priorities Strategy faces as a publicly traded company, including obligations to both common and preferred shareholders while continuing to pursue its Bitcoin accumulation strategy.

Bitcoin treasury model faces bear market pressure

The broader corporate Bitcoin treasury model has also faced increasing pressure as weaker market conditions challenge the financing dynamics that supported its rapid growth. Public companies currently hold more than 1.26 million BTC, compared with more than 1.6 million BTC held by exchange-traded funds and other funds, according to BitcoinTreasuries.NET.

Historically, Bitcoin treasury companies have benefited from trading at premiums to the value of their underlying BTC holdings. This allowed them to raise capital through equity or debt and use the proceeds to purchase additional Bitcoin, according to Novaque Research. However, the strategy becomes more difficult when a company trades below the net asset value of its Bitcoin holdings. Under those conditions, raising additional capital can become increasingly dilutive for existing shareholders.
