Standard Chartered and USDC issuer Circle have developed a new system allowing institutional clients to mint and redeem USDC through the bank’s existing onboarding process. The bank said on Thursday that it is the first Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) to provide this type of service for USDC. The offering brings stablecoin access under the same compliance, risk management and governance standards used across traditional banking.

Institutional clients will be able to mint and redeem the US dollar-backed stablecoin directly through Standard Chartered’s platform, removing the need to establish separate accounts with Circle. “By embedding USDC access directly within Standard Chartered’s institutional offering, Standard Chartered will bring together banking, custody, and digital asset services within one integrated offering,” the announcement said. The service will initially be introduced through the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).

Institutional stablecoin use cases expand

The collaboration reflects the growing integration of stablecoin infrastructure into conventional banking systems, as issuers and financial institutions compete to shape how digital assets such as USDC are distributed and accessed. The new capability is designed to support institutional activities including onchain settlement, treasury operations and liquidity management. It could also provide the foundation for payment-related services in the future.

Although the first rollout will take place through Standard Chartered’s DIFC operations, the bank plans to extend the service to additional markets, subject to regulatory approval and client demand. Roberto Hoornweg, CEO of corporate and investment banking at Standard Chartered, said the initiative aims to apply established banking standards to digital asset markets as demand for regulated infrastructure grows.

“Ultimately, this is about enabling broader institutional participation in digital asset markets through the frameworks, controls and regulatory oversight that have long supported confidence in global financial markets,” he said.

Stablecoin competition continues to grow

The announcement follows comments from Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire, who defended USDC’s network effects amid rising competition from new stablecoin projects such as Open USD (OUSD). Allaire highlighted the increasing competition around stablecoin distribution, liquidity and revenue models, while maintaining that many companies involved in new initiatives are expected to continue using USDC.

“With OUSD, we work closely with many of the founding members, and we expect that those same members will remain large USDC partners and customers,” he said on Wednesday.
