Mastercard and stablecoin orchestration network Borderless are launching a pilot project to test how Mastercard’s Crypto Credential framework can improve trust and reduce friction in cross-border stablecoin payments. The initiative will examine how standardized assurance signals can be used by participating institutions within their approval, compliance and risk-management processes.

Mastercard’s Crypto Credential framework is built around common standards designed to give participants greater confidence when processing blockchain-based transactions. The pilot will explore additional governance signals that could make cross-border stablecoin payments more efficient and easier to assess.

Compliance remains one of the main challenges for stablecoin payments, according to Kevin Lehtiniitty, CEO and co-founder of Borderless. “Correspondent banking solved this decades ago: originating compliance trusted downstream, no re-execution at every counterparty. Mastercard is applying that model to digital asset payments,” he explained.

Crypto credential to serve as verification layer

Under the pilot, Mastercard’s Crypto Credential framework will function as a governance and verification layer rather than a settlement system. Lehtiniitty said Mastercard will not process or settle funds directly as part of the project. Instead, its framework will provide standardized signals that counterparties can use when evaluating transactions. The approach is intended to reduce duplicated compliance checks and create more consistent standards across stablecoin payment networks.

Mastercard continues stablecoin expansion

The pilot is the latest step in Mastercard’s broader push into stablecoins and digital asset infrastructure. Earlier this week, Mastercard completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure company BVNK in a deal valued at $1.8 billion. In June, Mastercard also announced plans to expand its settlement capabilities to support intraday, weekend and holiday card settlement using stablecoins.

The planned support includes Circle’s USDC, Paxos-issued PYUSD, USDG and USDP, Ripple’s RLUSD and SoFi’s SoFiUSD, further expanding Mastercard’s role in connecting stablecoin infrastructure with traditional payment systems.
