Alongside the increased transaction limit, the network introduced the v1 transaction format while maintaining full backward compatibility with legacy transactions. Existing transaction formats will continue to function for applications and wallet providers. However, protocols seeking to take advantage of the larger transaction capacity will need to adopt the new v1 format.
A Solana Foundation spokesperson said the upgrade is primarily designed to help developers “do more” with applications involving zero-knowledge proofs, transactions requiring multiple signatures and new onchain signature schemes. The additional capacity enables developers to handle workloads within a single transaction that previously exceeded Solana’s transaction size limit.
The transaction upgrade follows several other changes aimed at improving Solana’s network performance and capabilities. In August, Solana reduced its slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds. The Solana Foundation had previously outlined plans in June to eventually lower slot times to 200 milliseconds, which it said could reduce latency and provide faster transaction confirmations.
Solana has also recently introduced changes affecting the economics of its native SOL token. On Aug. 28, validators approved a proposal to double the network’s annual disinflation rate. The change is designed to reduce the pace of future SOL issuance and bring the network toward its long-term inflation target more quickly.
