The results showed that 59% of respondents were familiar with crypto assets, while one in four reported owning them. “Crypto markets continue to evolve, and Canadians are participating in them more than ever before,” said Naizam Kanji, executive vice president of strategic regulation at the OSC. “By identifying emerging trends and behaviors with our research, we can look around corners, anticipate potential opportunities and risks, and ensure our regulatory approach supports investor protection while fostering fair and efficient markets.”
The survey suggests that Canadians are becoming more aware of the risks associated with cryptocurrencies, although many investors still have an incomplete understanding of how the industry operates. Around 50% of crypto holders said they verify whether a platform is registered before using it.
However, the OSC found that many respondents remained uncertain about areas such as regulatory oversight, insurance protections and the capabilities of crypto transactions. The findings indicate that while participation in digital assets continues to grow, investor education remains an important area of focus.
Canadian lawmakers have proposed several measures aimed at strengthening oversight of the digital asset sector. In April, the federal government advanced legislation that could prohibit political donations made with cryptocurrencies. Officials also proposed banning cryptocurrency ATMs, citing concerns over fraud and consumer protection.
