The bank announced that more than 3.3 million PayMe users will be able to activate stablecoin wallets within the app over the coming days, providing access to RedCoin for transfers and payments at participating merchants. The launch represents a significant step in bringing regulated stablecoins to everyday financial transactions in Hong Kong.
RedCoin is designed to maintain a one-to-one redemption value against the Hong Kong dollar, allowing holders to exchange the digital token for an equivalent amount of local currency. The stablecoin is supported by HSBC Digital Assets Custody, which provides safekeeping services for the digital asset.
Through its integration with PayMe, HSBC aims to make stablecoin transactions accessible to a large existing user base without requiring customers to adopt a separate cryptocurrency payment application. The initial rollout will enable eligible PayMe users to activate stablecoin wallets and use RedCoin for supported transfers and merchant payments.
The development follows the introduction of another Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin, HKDAP, by Anchorpoint Financial through HashKey Exchange in August. Unlike HSBC's consumer-focused rollout, Anchorpoint's initial distribution targeted eligible institutional clients and professional investors.
HSBC's RedCoin launch follows the bank's receipt of a stablecoin issuer license in April under Hong Kong's regulatory framework for fiat-referenced stablecoins. HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial became the first two companies to receive authorization under the territory's stablecoin licensing regime.
Anchorpoint Financial is a joint venture supported by Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands and telecommunications company HKT. The licensing approvals marked an important development in Hong Kong's efforts to establish a regulated environment for stablecoin issuance and adoption.
By introducing RedCoin through an established consumer payment platform, HSBC is extending the use of regulated digital currencies beyond institutional trading and investment activities. The launch could also provide an early indication of consumer demand for stablecoin payments within Hong Kong's existing financial services ecosystem.
Beyond its initial integration with PayMe, HSBC intends to introduce RedCoin wallets within its HSBC HK Mobile Banking App later in 2026. The planned expansion would allow banking customers to use the stablecoin to subscribe to tokenized investment products. Among the products under consideration is a new tokenized share class of HSBC's Hong Kong dollar money market fund, potentially connecting stablecoin payments with traditional investment services.
The bank also plans to expand RedCoin into wholesale financial applications, targeting corporate and institutional customers. These future services could broaden the stablecoin's role beyond consumer payments, supporting additional financial transactions and investment activities.
HSBC's rollout reflects a broader effort to integrate blockchain-based assets into established banking infrastructure, with RedCoin positioned to support both everyday payments and more specialized financial services as the bank expands its digital asset offerings.
