Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has proposed an accelerated timeline for Ethereum's transition to post-quantum and post-artificial intelligence infrastructure, aiming to complete the process by December 2028.

The proposed target is one year earlier than the Ethereum Foundation's existing deadline for achieving quantum resistance across the blockchain's core infrastructure. Speaking at Devcon 8 in Mumbai, Drake outlined plans to complete three additional network upgrades over the next 24 months as developers prepare Ethereum for emerging technological challenges.

Ethereum targets December 2028 for post-quantum transition

Drake presented the revised timeline during Devcon 8, emphasizing the importance of accelerating Ethereum's development toward infrastructure designed to withstand future quantum computing threats and adapt to advances in artificial intelligence. “Our hope is that by December 2028 we’ll be able to wrap up the full post-quantum and post-AI transition,” Drake said.

The proposed schedule would require Ethereum developers to deliver three additional network upgrades within approximately two years. These upgrades are expected to contribute to the blockchain's broader transition toward cryptographic systems capable of resisting attacks from sufficiently advanced quantum computers.

Quantum computing presents a potential long-term challenge for blockchain networks because powerful quantum systems could eventually compromise certain cryptographic methods used to secure digital assets and transactions. Ethereum's development efforts are therefore focused on preparing its infrastructure for potential future security risks while maintaining the network's functionality.

Drake's comments also reflect the Ethereum Foundation's broader interest in adapting blockchain technology to an environment increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence. However, the specific technical requirements for completing the post-AI transition were not detailed in the reported remarks.

Ethereum Foundation's official roadmap still targets 2029

Although Drake's proposed deadline represents a more ambitious development schedule, it does not formally replace the Ethereum Foundation's existing roadmap. In September 2026, the foundation published its protocol priorities, establishing December 2029 as the target for implementing quantum-resistant protections across Ethereum's three primary infrastructure layers.

These include the execution layer, which processes transactions and smart contracts, the consensus layer, which coordinates network validation, and the data layer, which supports the availability of information required by the blockchain ecosystem. The foundation's current roadmap is scheduled for reassessment in January 2027, when developers may evaluate progress and reconsider implementation timelines.

Drake had previously outlined a phased approach to Ethereum's quantum-resistance development in August. That proposal included making leanVM technology production-ready in 2027, followed by the deployment of post-quantum capabilities across Ethereum's execution, consensus and data layers during 2028.

The latest remarks at Devcon 8 appear consistent with that earlier development strategy, while introducing a more specific target for completing the broader transition. Whether Ethereum can meet the accelerated schedule will depend on the successful development, testing and implementation of the planned upgrades.

Blockchain developers raise concerns over quantum security deadlines

Ethereum's approach to quantum resistance has attracted scrutiny from other blockchain developers, some of whom believe the network should move more quickly to address emerging cryptographic risks. In October, the Starknet community supported research into the possibility of developing an independent post-quantum layer-1 blockchain.

The initiative reflected concerns about relying on Ethereum's existing development schedule to deliver quantum-resistant infrastructure. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson previously criticized Ethereum's December 2029 deadline, describing it as “too late.” Ben-Sasson also warned that development timelines could face delays, potentially extending the period before comprehensive quantum-resistant protections become available.

The debate highlights the challenges blockchain networks face when preparing for technological threats whose exact development timelines remain uncertain. While practical quantum computers capable of breaking widely used blockchain cryptography are not yet established, developers are increasingly considering how to prepare existing networks before such capabilities emerge.

Drake's proposed December 2028 deadline would represent an acceleration of Ethereum's security roadmap, although the foundation's official December 2029 target remains in place pending further review. The planned upgrades and the January 2027 roadmap reassessment will be important milestones in determining whether Ethereum can complete its post-quantum and post-AI transition within the proposed timeframe.
