In a meeting with science and tech advisors, U.S. President Joe Biden stated that the safety of artificial intelligence (AI) remains quite uncertain, and that technology companies must ensure that their products are safe and secure before being launched to the public and mass markets.
Biden believes that AI can be highly valuable in tackling issues like disease and climate change, yet, he re-iterated his concern of the risks of AI to society, national security and the economy. According to the president of the United States, social media has already demonstrated the negative impacts which powerful technologies can have on society when there are “absent safeguards” and non-implemented measures which can harm mental health, “especially among young people”.
When asked about the potential risks of AI in the meeting which was held on Tuesday, Biden replied that “it is yet to be determined”, and that “there is a possibility” of hazard stemming out of artificial intelligence.
