YouTube Welcomes New CEO
Neal Mohan, a Web3-supportive executive, has been named as the new CEO of YouTube, which is owned by Google. This appointment follows the departure of Susan Wojcicki from YouTube on February 16 after nine years of leadership, during which she oversaw the introduction of the revenue-sharing model and other important developments.
Wojcicki has expressed her intention to embark on a new chapter of her life focusing on personal interests, family, and health, while also staying on as an advisor for Alphabet, Google's parent company.
Neal Mohan previously served as the company's chief product officer, where he oversaw the implementation of YouTube Shorts, the removal of the video dislike button, and the introduction of YouTube Music. In February 2022, Mohan expressed interest in Web3 integration and proposed features such as content tokenization through NFTs and Metaverse-based content experiences.
He argued that NFTs could create new opportunities for creators to interact with their audiences, monetize their content, and collaborate on new projects. Mohan's vision for Web3 has received criticism from those who dislike NFTs. Although Web 3-related plans were expected to be launched last year, they have not been implemented yet. However, with Mohan now at the helm of YouTube, the plans could be given another push in the near future.
