The feature was highlighted by X’s head of product development Nikita Bier. According to him, Smart Cashtags expand the existing dollar-sign asset tagging system, such as $BTC or $TSLA, and turn it into a fully fledged financial tool. Users are expected to gain access not only to live prices, but also to additional information about each asset.
Concept images further suggest that X is considering in-app trading. Preview screenshots show Buy and Sell buttons, indicating potential crypto and stock trading without leaving the platform. However, details on how the feature would work and when it will be officially released remain unclear.
Bier stated on X that users will also have access to information about smart contracts linked to specific cryptocurrencies. Each asset is expected to feature its own mentions section, displaying recent discussions, relevant posts, and news about the companies or teams behind each project.
“X is the best source of financial information, and hundreds of billions of dollars move every day based on what people read here,” Bier wrote. According to him, the platform plans to collect feedback first before rolling out the feature publicly, most likely in February.
Integrating financial services into X has long been part of the vision of Elon Musk, who acquired the platform in October 2022. His goal is to turn X into a universal app for communication, payments, news, and commerce.
This is not X’s first attempt. Back in December 2022, the platform introduced Cashtags that displayed price charts for Bitcoin and selected stocks or ETFs. At the time, the data was provided by TradingView and included a View on Robinhood link redirecting users to the trading app Robinhood.
That feature was later removed. The new Smart Cashtags are expected to be far more ambitious, offering not only charts but also context, discussions, project information, and potentially direct trading on X.
If these plans materialize, X could evolve into more than just a place to follow crypto trends. It may become a platform that directly links social media with real financial decision-making. For everyday users, this would mean having the price of bitcoin, ether, or major tech stocks literally at their fingertips.
