World Foundation has secured an initial $52.5 million by selling locked WLD tokens to a group of strategic investors, with Pantera Capital leading the round. Other participants included Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, Susquehanna Crypto and additional investors, according to a Friday announcement shared with Cointelegraph. The WLD tokens distributed through the fundraising will remain locked for 12 months.

The nonprofit organization behind the World protocol said the funding will support the expansion of World ID, a system created to help distinguish real people from AI agents. Users receive a digital credential after completing biometric verification through a World Orb device.

The organization said the rapid growth of AI-generated content and autonomous agents is increasing demand for tools that can confirm whether an online participant is human. World was originally developed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Max Novendstern and Tools for Humanity CEO Alex Blania. The project has faced regulatory scrutiny in several countries over its biometric identity verification model.

Crypto investment expands into AI infrastructure

Investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure and agent-focused technologies has accelerated as crypto companies and venture capital firms broaden their focus beyond traditional digital asset markets. Earlier this month, brokerage infrastructure provider Alpaca raised $135 million in equity financing and secured access to as much as $300 million in debt financing to grow its agent-first brokerage platform. The company said the funding would support infrastructure for AI-powered financial applications.

The raise came shortly before Coinbase introduced tools that allow businesses to accept USDC payments from autonomous AI agents. Coinbase also said AI-generated traffic surpassed human traffic on its Base developer documentation for the first time last month.

Investors target AI, robotics and security

Venture capital interest in frontier technologies has also continued to grow. Paradigm raised a $1.2 billion fund in July to invest across crypto, artificial intelligence, robotics and related sectors. Framework Ventures closed a $400 million fund in June with a similar focus spanning crypto, AI, robotics and energy.

Capital is also moving into AI-related cybersecurity. AegisAI raised $36 million in Series A funding this week to expand its AI-powered email security tools, with the company saying the investment would help strengthen defenses against increasingly advanced AI-generated phishing attacks.
