Turkey intends to employ a blockchain technology for online public service login. E-Devlet, Turkey's digital government site for accessing a variety of government services, will adopt a blockchain-based digital identity system to validate Turkish individuals upon login.
Fuat Oktay, Turkey's vice president, revealed during the Digital Turkey 2023 event that residents would be able to use e-wallet applications using blockchain-based digital identities. Oktay described the blockchain-based program as a revolution for e-government activities, saying that blockchain will make online services safer and more accessible. Users will be able to save digital data on their mobile phones.
Several blockchain-powered initiatives have been announced in Turkey throughout the years, but only a handful have been implemented. Plans for a national blockchain infrastructure in the country date back to 2019. However, with the exception of a few proof-of-concept initiatives and a central bank digital currency test that was completed after repeated delays, its blockchain goals have yet to produce fruit.
As of January 2020, Turkey's cultural capital of Konya was working on a "City Coin" initiative that would allow locals to pay for public services, but no further updates have been released in the past two years.
