Switzerland is preparing to introduce its first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) available to retail investors, following regulatory approval from the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA). The regulator announced that it had authorized the country's first ETF investing directly in Bitcoin (BTC), although it initially did not identify the fund's issuer.

BIT Asset Management confirmed that its Bitcoin Fund ETF (BBIT) is expected to begin trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November 2026. The fund will hold Bitcoin directly and has received authorization for public distribution exclusively within Switzerland.

Switzerland approves first spot Bitcoin ETF for retail investors

FINMA's approval represents a significant development for Switzerland's cryptocurrency investment market, allowing retail investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through a regulated exchange-traded fund. Unlike investment products that track Bitcoin through derivatives or debt-based structures, the Bitcoin Fund ETF will hold the cryptocurrency directly.

BIT Asset Management highlighted the distinction between its newly approved fund and many existing cryptocurrency investment products available across Europe. “Most bitcoin products listed in Europe today are exchange-traded products (ETPs), which are debt instruments that carry issuer risk,” said BIT Asset Management.

The company explained that its Bitcoin Fund ETF operates as a Swiss collective investment scheme rather than a conventional debt-based exchange-traded product. Under this structure, the fund's assets are maintained separately from those belonging to the management company.

These assets are also “ring-fenced” for investors, providing a legal separation between the fund's holdings and the assets of its operator. The structure is intended to offer investors a different form of protection compared with exchange-traded products that expose holders to the creditworthiness of their issuers.

FINMA expands cryptocurrency investment approvals

The Bitcoin Fund ETF has been classified under Switzerland's regulatory category for “other funds for alternative investments,” which carries a particular risk designation. Although FINMA has previously permitted cryptocurrency investment funds, the latest authorization marks the first approval of a Swiss fund dedicated exclusively to Bitcoin.

Since 2021, the regulator has allowed investment funds that primarily hold diversified baskets of cryptocurrencies. However, it had not previously authorized a fund investing solely in Bitcoin for the retail market. FINMA cited Bitcoin's established trading history and comparatively high trading volumes as factors supporting its decision.

These characteristics distinguish Bitcoin from many smaller cryptocurrencies, which may have shorter operating histories and less liquid markets. The regulator also disclosed that additional fund providers have submitted applications for Bitcoin ETFs, suggesting that more products could enter the Swiss market if they satisfy the relevant regulatory requirements.

FINMA warns Bitcoin remains a high-risk investment

Despite granting approval, FINMA emphasized that investing in Bitcoin continues to involve significant risks. The regulator specifically highlighted the cryptocurrency's substantial price volatility, which remains relevant regardless of whether investors purchase Bitcoin directly or obtain exposure through a regulated ETF.

While an approved investment fund can provide a regulated structure for holding the asset, it does not eliminate the possibility of considerable market losses. The Bitcoin Fund ETF's classification as an alternative investment product with particular risks reflects these concerns.

The upcoming launch on SIX Swiss Exchange will provide Swiss retail investors with another regulated route to Bitcoin exposure, while introducing a fund structure that differs from many existing European cryptocurrency ETPs. With additional applications under review, FINMA's decision could also open the door for further spot Bitcoin ETF offerings in Switzerland.

However, the regulator's approval should not be interpreted as an endorsement of Bitcoin's investment performance or a guarantee against losses, as the underlying cryptocurrency remains subject to significant market fluctuations.
