On September 14, cryptocurrency exchange Remitano reported huge withdrawals under questionable circumstances, which the team later revealed was a hack. The attack resulted in the withdrawal of $2.7 million in cryptocurrency.
Tether froze one of the suspected attacker's addresses, potentially safeguarding $1.4 million in customer cryptocurrency.
On September 14, about 12:45 p.m., a known Remitano hot wallet began transmitting cash to an address with no prior history. The new address received around $1.4 million in Tether (USDT), $208,000 in USD Coin (USDC), and 104,000 Ankr tokens (worth $2,000 at the time).
Cyvers, a blockchain analytics platform, notified the crypto community of the potential suspicious transactions.
Tether then froze the address to prevent the attacker from withdrawing USDT, preventing $1.4 million of the drained cryptocurrency from being moved further.
In a blog post on September 15, Remitano acknowledged the attack:
"[O]ur Security Management team discovered a data breach from a third-party source that had compromised some of our sensitive information," according to the business. "As a result, a small amount of funds were transferred from the exchange's hot wallets to suspicious wallet addresses through unauthorized withdrawal transactions."
According to the exchange, user funds "have NOT been and will NOT be affected by this incident," and deposits and withdrawals should be available again within 48 hours. Deposits and withdrawals for Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin are still possible, according to the team, but other networks may be inaccessible.
