New UK Prime Minister Supports CBDC
The newly elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, expressed his support for CBDCs in the country. Sunak claimed that he was proud to establish a set of public policy principles for retail Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) during the United Kingdom's presidency, with backing from the G7, the "group of the world's most sophisticated nations." He went on to describe what CBDCs provide as a digital form of money, like a digital banknote that can be used alongside real equivalents. CBDCs, unlike current currency, will be issued by the Central Bank of England in the United Kingdom. He stated that governments and banks across the world are collaborating to understand the practical ramifications of deploying digital currency.
Sunak claims that CBDCs are part of a digital innovation movement that wants to help billions throughout the world, including the UK, by introducing new payment options for companies and consumers. However, whether or not to establish a CBDC is a decision for each country, and no G7 jurisdiction has yet taken that decision.
