Metaplanet Surpasses El Salvador in Bitcoin Holdings
Japanese investment company Metaplanet has expanded its Bitcoin reserves by an additional $129 million, surpassing the Bitcoin holdings of El Salvador.
“Metaplanet now holds more Bitcoin than El Salvador. From humble beginnings to rivaling nation-states, we’re just getting started,” commented CEO Simon Gerovich on X following the announcement of the latest acquisition.
On May 12, the Tokyo-listed company disclosed that it had purchased 1,241 Bitcoin for 14.8 million yen ($101,843) per coin.
This latest acquisition, made at the company’s highest-ever purchase price, is currently valued at approximately $129 million.
With this purchase, Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin holdings have increased to 6,796 BTC, now worth around $707 million, with an average acquisition price of $91,000 per coin. The firm began its Bitcoin accumulation strategy in April 2024.
El Salvador remains the sixth-largest nation-state holder of Bitcoin, owning 6,714 BTC valued at about $642 million, according to data from the National Bitcoin Office.
Metaplanet also reported a Bitcoin Yield of 38% for the current quarter to date, reflecting the percentage change in Bitcoin holdings per fully diluted share. The company previously recorded a Bitcoin Yield of 95.6% in the first quarter of 2025.
In recent months, Metaplanet has ramped up its Bitcoin accumulation, including a purchase of 5,555 BTC on May 7, four separate acquisitions in April totaling 18,586 BTC, and six purchases in March totaling 18,925 BTC — each transaction larger than the last.
The company is currently the largest Bitcoin holder in Asia and ranks as the tenth-largest holder globally, according to BiTBO.
Meanwhile, Michael Saylor hinted at a possible new purchase by his firm, Strategy, on May 12 by sharing a screenshot of the “Saylor Tracker” chart, which monitors the company’s Bitcoin treasury portfolio. “Connect the dots,” he wrote alongside the post.
Saylor has previously posted similar cryptic messages on Mondays, often followed by an announcement of additional Bitcoin purchases.
At present, Strategy holds 555,450 BTC, valued at roughly $57.8 billion, as indicated by the tracker.
