Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, is marking their 50th birthday during a year that has seen increasing institutional and geopolitical adoption of the first cryptocurrency.

Nakamoto’s identity remains one of the crypto world’s greatest mysteries, with speculation pointing to figures like Adam Back and Nick Szabo, and even broader theories involving government agencies.

Although the identity has never been confirmed, it's believed Nakamoto turned 50 on April 5, based on earlier details.

Archived data from Nakamoto’s P2P Foundation profile stated they were a 37-year-old man living in Japan, listing April 5, 1975, as a birthdate.

Nakamoto’s anonymity has been crucial in preserving Bitcoin’s decentralized structure, which operates without any central leadership.

The Bitcoin wallet associated with Nakamoto, containing over 1 million BTC, has remained untouched for more than 16 years—even as Bitcoin rose from virtually nothing to a peak above $109,000 in January.

Nakamoto’s 50th birthday comes just weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and a Digital Asset Stockpile—an unprecedented step in integrating Bitcoin into the U.S. financial system.

“At 50, Nakamoto’s legacy is no longer just code; it’s a cornerstone of economic sovereignty,” said Anndy Lian, author and intergovernmental blockchain expert.

“Bitcoin’s reserve status signals trust in its scarcity and resilience,” Lian told Cointelegraph, adding:

“What’s fascinating is the timing. Fifty feels symbolic — half a century of life, mirrored by Bitcoin’s journey from a white paper to a trillion-dollar asset. Nakamoto’s vision of trustless, peer-to-peer money has outgrown its cypherpunk roots, entering the halls of power.”

Questions remain about whether Nakamoto still controls access to the original wallet, which Lian described as “a fortune now tied to US policy.”

In February, Arkham Intelligence released findings attributing 1.096 million BTC to Nakamoto—worth over $108 billion at the time.

That would place them ahead of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in global wealth rankings, according to Coinbase director Conor Grogan.

If accurate, Nakamoto would be the 16th richest person in the world.

Despite growing curiosity surrounding Nakamoto’s identity and holdings, the decision to remain anonymous and inactive has helped ensure that Bitcoin continues to embody its founding principle of decentralization.
