The International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO) or Interpol in short is looking into the possibilities and capabilities of policing crimes in the emerging metaverse, but the secretary general of the global police agency highlighted the issues in defining ‘a metaverse crime’.
BBC reported that Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock unveiled the agency’s intent to oversee criminal activity on the metaverse, since the sophistication and professionalism of cyber criminals poses a concern for the metaverse environment where users play, work and communicate.
As said by Stock, “There are crimes where I don’t know whether it can still be called a crime or not. If you look at the definitions of these crimes in physical space, and you try to apply it in the metaverse, there is a difficulty.”
The other paramount objective eyed by the Interpol is raising awareness regarding the potential metaverse crimes which can occur, and how victimized users should deal with such criminal activity.
