In Finland, the excess heat generated by crypto mining farms is now being used to warm residential homes. Mining cryptocurrencies is an electricity-demanding process — if just Bitcoin were a country, it would consume as much energy as Finland itself.
Companies focused on mining, like Hashlabs, Terahash, MARA, and MinersLoop, have developed an efficient method to capture and reuse the heat produced while mining.
They connect water-cooled ASIC miners directly to city heating systems, feeding captured heat into municipal pipelines. An ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) is a specialized piece of equipment designed solely for mining cryptocurrencies. Unlike other types of mining devices, ASICs cannot be used for anything else.
Analysts estimate that mining heat now warms homes for around 140,000 Finns — roughly 2.5% of the country’s population. The approach reduces pressure on traditional heating systems and cuts carbon emissions.
Finland’s example demonstrates how crypto mining can support sustainable energy use, transforming a high-energy industry into a contributor to renewable heat solutions. Experts believe similar projects may soon expand across Europe.
One of the first mining companies to start using excess crypto-mining energy for heating in Finland was Marathon Digital (MARA). In December, it announced plans to provide heat for approximately 80,000 residents through an innovative, environmentally responsible approach.
This initiative builds on a pilot project launched in June, where Marathon supplied heat to 11,000 homes in Finland’s Satakunta region. The expansion added another 67,000 residents to its network.
According to the company’s June statement, Marathon uses district heating technology to channel surplus Bitcoin mining heat through underground pipelines to warm homes efficiently.
This kind of “digital cogeneration” shows immense potential. Estimates suggest Bitcoin mining requires about 91 terawatt-hours of electricity per year — slightly more than Finland itself consumes. It’s no wonder Finland is among the pioneers finding ways to use this vast amount of generated energy.
