The police force of Hong Kong has launched a new metaverse platform to promote cyberspace crime prevention and help citizens avoid the dangers linked with the metaverse and Web3 spaces.
Coined as CyberDefender, the metaverse platform is designed to educate the people about the potential dangers associated with Web3. On the launch day on May 27, an event was held on the platform called “Exploring the Metaverse” which explores metaverse crime prevention strategies, and chief inspector of the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) of the Hong Kong Police Force stated:
“All crimes in the cyberspace could also happen in the metaverse, such as investment frauds, unauthorized access to systems, theft and sexual offenses.” He further added that the risk of asset theft will be hegithened with the rise of decentralization, arguing that the “decentralized nature of virtual assets in Web” can increase “the likelihood of cyber criminals targeting end point devices, virtual asset wallets and smart contracts.”
The Hong Kong Police Force aims to double up up on its technology crime educational endeavors, especially for the younger audience after a significant rise in virtual asset crime occurred in the Asian nation in the first quarter of 2023.
