Tim Sweeny, CEO of Epic Games, has took to Twitter to mock a Business Insider article which suggests that the metaverse industry is beyond abandoned.
Creator of the Unreal Engine and Fortnite, the now-billionaire video game entrepreneur mocked a new article published by Business Insider titled “RIP Metaverse, we hardly knew ye.” In his tweet which makes fun of this notion, Sweeny said:
“The metaverse is dead! Let's organize an online wake so that we 600,000,000 monthly active users in Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, PUBG Mobile, Sandbox, and VRChat can mourn its passing together in real-time 3D.”
The article claims that the metaverse phenomenon was a “once-buzzy technology” and has “died after being abandoned by the business world”. Not just Tim Sweeny, but his followers alongside others, which include analysts and gamers, believe that the metaverse is set to prosper one day in the future.
Epic Games announced a $2 billion funding round to accelerate its metaverse-focused plans back in April of 2022. It’s worthy to note that Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, went to the extent of rebranding while pouring billions of dollars towards this industry, which may indicate that the metaverse is not only here to stay, but to prosper.
