The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) ruled that certain emojis count as financial advice which can have legal consequences when misused. In specific, the rocket ship, stock chart and money bag emojis have been ruled as objectively signifying “a financial return on investment”, as said in a tweet by former SEC branch chief Lisa Braganca.
The word ‘profit’ does not have to be included for any tweets, messages, social media posts or other forms of information sharing for them to be subjectively regarded as investment and financial advice. The crypto community had mixed feelings about this, with some describing the news as tragic while others pointing out that speech censorship has entered the realm of emojis.
