The Dogecoin foundation took action to prevent attempts from people, who are not in any way connected to them, to register the name. According to one of the the board members, Jens Wiechers, this will help the battle against fraud and extortion. They announced this action on Wednesday, with the statement that they registered names “Doge” and “Dogecoin” along with its associated logos as trademarks in the territory of the European Union.
The executive of the foundation calmed down some people, that using their picture or name in memes was not the problem and it still is not, however, the problem was people, that tried to somehow abuse the name in wrongdoing.
When the coin was created in 2014 as part of a joke or meme, they did not seek the trademark. But the company said that the main reason for doing so were 100 cryptocurrencies, that had nothing to do with Dogecoin, were using the Dogecoin name. In 2021 it even happened, that there was the potential lawsuit against the developers, as someone claimed that they are responsible for their funds – the person traded some other cryptocurrency under the same name, Dogecoin.
