China is believed to be considering implementing a system similar to its social credit system in the metaverse and other online virtual worlds.
According to POLITICO, China Mobile, a state-owned telecom, has proposed a digital ID for all metaverse and online virtual world users that works with "natural characteristics" and "social characteristics."
The proposals suggest that in order to "keep the order and safety of the virtual world," the ID would contain "a slew of personal information and identifiable signs, including a person's job," and such data would be permanently maintained and shared with authorities.
A problem user who "spreads rumors and causes chaos in the metaverse" was given as an example of the system's benefits, with the digital ID allowing police to rapidly discover and punish the offender.
The concept is similar to China's social credit system, which is still under development and scores and ranks residents based on a variety of metrics, while also serving as a tool for enforcement.
