Bitcoin has dropped closer to the key $100,000 level, disappointing traders who were hoping for a new all-time high. The decline followed Israeli airstrikes on Iran, with explosions reported in Tehran around 22:50 UTC on Thursday.
Within 90 minutes, Bitcoin fell 2.8% from $106,042 to $103,053 before slightly rebounding to $104,370, according to CoinMarketCap.
The sudden downturn caught many traders off guard, leading to liquidations of approximately $427.84 million in long positions over the past 24 hours, based on data from CoinGlass. Earlier that same week, Bitcoin had reached $110,265—just shy of its May 22 all-time high of $111,940.
While gold and oil prices rose by 1.44% and 11% respectively during the same period, some analysts suggest this trend might not last. Anthony Pompliano pointed out that this pattern mirrors what happened when Iran launched a large-scale rocket attack on Israel last October, causing Bitcoin to drop 3% initially—only to outperform gold and oil within 48 hours.
Uncertainty remains over how the situation will evolve. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities and would continue “as many days as it takes.”
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned of severe retaliation, with reports suggesting over 100 drones had already been launched in response. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the U.S. was not involved in the strikes.
Meanwhile, some Bitcoin advocates see the dip as a buying opportunity. Samson Mow, addressing GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen, said now is the time to buy—even more so if the price drops further.
Notably, GameStop recently used part of a $1.5 billion raise to acquire 4,710 Bitcoin, worth $513 million at the time of purchase on May 28.
