A potentially harmful application posing as the Trezor crypto hardware wallet has been removed from the Apple App Store. However, despite this removal, other fraudulent apps with similar intentions are still present on the platform.
Rafael Yakobi, Managing Partner at Crypto Lawyers, raised concerns about the security of Apple's App Store. He alerted users to the existence of a fake app called "Trezor Wallet Suite" that would prompt users to provide their seed phrase, enabling the operators to steal their cryptocurrency.
The most secure method to download mobile apps for crypto wallets is through the official websites of the manufacturers. Although there is an iOS app available for Trezor users, it is only a companion app with limited features. The tech giant has strict regulations for approving crypto apps and is not particularly friendly towards them.
The outlet highlighted that despite Apple's claim that the App Store is trustworthy and actively combats scams, fraudulent wallet apps still manage to appear on the platform. This is not a new issue, as in 2021, a user reportedly lost $600,000 in Bitcoin after downloading a malicious Trezor app from the App Store.
Be careful out there and always double-check what you are downloading and opening!
