Bitcoin miner Riot Platforms has signed a 20-year agreement to provide 191 megawatts of capacity from its Rockdale, Texas, facility to what it described as a “leading frontier AI” company, according to a Monday press release.

Bloomberg reported that the customer is Anthropic and that the agreement is valued at approximately $9 billion, citing people familiar with the matter. The deal would mark another major infrastructure agreement for Anthropic, which also signed a $19 billion, 20-year data center lease with Bitcoin miner TeraWulf on July 6.

Riot joins Bitcoin miners expanding into AI

The reported agreement would place Riot among a growing number of Bitcoin mining companies diversifying into artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure. Other miners pursuing similar strategies include Bitdeer, CleanSpark, MARA Holdings, Core Scientific, Hut 8 and IREN.

The trend reflects increasing demand from AI companies for large-scale power and data center capacity, areas where Bitcoin miners already have significant infrastructure in place.

Riot shares jump in overnight trading

Riot shares fell 5.4% during Monday’s regular session but gained more than 21% in overnight trading. The stock is up more than 53% so far this year, according to Yahoo Finance. Riot is currently the world’s fourth-largest publicly listed Bitcoin mining company by market capitalization, with a valuation of approximately $7.33 billion, according to CompaniesMarketCap.

AI demand drives new opportunities for Bitcoin miners

The expansion of Bitcoin miners into AI infrastructure comes as power availability becomes an increasingly important constraint for the artificial intelligence sector. Bernstein said in a July 23 report that partnerships between AI companies and Bitcoin miners are becoming necessary to help address the power shortage limiting the development of new AI data centers.

Bitcoin miners often already control large power connections, land and data center infrastructure, making them potential partners for AI companies seeking to expand computing capacity more quickly.
