The lead-up to the Pectra upgrade has been demanding for Ethereum developers. Rokish told Cointelegraph:

“I think that people are nervous because we just had two testnets in a row basically have really unexpected issues that were not fundamentally related to how it would have gone on mainnet.”

She noted that fatigue is becoming a real factor, particularly among consensus layer developers, as Hoodi represents the third test attempt for Pectra.

“I think the consensus layer devs especially, but also like somewhat the execution layer devs are exhausted right now,” Rokish told Cointelegraph.

According to Rokish, Ethereum developers addressed the critical issues. She explained that the Holesky testnet experienced problems partly due to a validator setup that hadn’t been tested before.

“As decentralized as Holesky is, it has never been tested at so few validators on the canonical chain,” she said.

When around 10% of validators remained on the canonical chain, their systems became overloaded as they retained the state for 90% of validators on the non-canonical chain.

Rokish pointed out that this situation was unprecedented. “And so the consensus layer devs all of a sudden had this problem where they had to change a bunch of things, and I think that that was really tiring for them,” she said.

Despite recent setbacks with testnets, Ethereum’s overall development is moving forward.

On March 13, 2024, the network implemented the Dencun upgrade, introducing numerous changes to the blockchain.

One of Ethereum’s most significant past challenges—high gas fees—has seen a major improvement.

One year after Dencun, gas fees have dropped by 95%, with average gas prices hitting a historic low of 0.28 gwei on March 23.
