STABLECOIN PAYMENTS
Stablecoin-powered remittances continue to demonstrate significant cost advantages over conventional international money transfers, particularly in emerging markets where traditional payment services often carry higher fees.

According to a third-quarter 2026 report from stablecoin payments network Borderless.xyz, sending $200 internationally through stablecoin-funded payment infrastructure costs a median of 1%, equivalent to $2. By comparison, traditional remittance services charge an average of 6.36%, or $12.72, based on World Bank data.

This represents a cost reduction of approximately 84%, although the comparison uses stablecoin pricing from the third quarter of 2026 and traditional remittance figures from the corresponding period in 2025.

Stablecoin remittances offer significant savings in emerging markets

Borderless.xyz's findings highlight the potential for stablecoins to reduce the cost of cross-border payments, particularly in regions where international transfers remain expensive. In Sub-Saharan Africa, stablecoin-funded remittances carry an average cost of 2.9%, compared with 8.46% for traditional money transfer services.

Latin America also demonstrates a substantial difference, with stablecoin-based transfers costing approximately 1.25%, compared with 5.64% through conventional payment channels. These savings could make stablecoin-funded services an increasingly attractive option for individuals sending money internationally, particularly those supporting family members or transferring relatively small amounts.

The report also identified considerable cost advantages for businesses conducting larger international transactions. For example, transferring $10,000 to the eurozone through the lowest-cost stablecoin payment provider could cost as little as $26. Across all payment corridors, the median stablecoin provider charged approximately $52 for a transaction of the same size.

In comparison, a traditional international bank transfer would cost between $135 and $150, including transaction fees and an assumed foreign-exchange margin of 1%.

Stablecoin payments settle faster than traditional bank transfers

Beyond lower transaction costs, stablecoin-funded payments can also offer significantly faster settlement times. According to Borderless.xyz, payments routed through supported local banking networks can reach recipients' accounts within minutes. During the third quarter, Brazil's PIX payment network recorded a median settlement time of two minutes, while Mexico's SPEI system completed transfers in approximately three minutes.

Colombia's PSE network also achieved a median settlement time of two minutes. Traditional international transfers processed through SWIFT, meanwhile, typically settled on the following business day. The slowest 10% of SWIFT transactions required up to three business days to complete, according to the report.

These findings suggest that stablecoin-funded payment infrastructure, when combined with domestic payment networks, can provide faster access to funds than conventional international banking arrangements.

Payment reliability baries across stablecoin networks

Despite the advantages in transaction costs and settlement speeds, the report identified notable differences in payment completion rates across local banking networks. Mexico's SPEI network recorded the highest completion rate among the examples provided, successfully processing 98.6% of payouts. Brazil's PIX system followed closely with a 97.8% completion rate.

However, performance was less consistent in other markets. Colombia's PSE network successfully completed 79% of payments, while Costa Rica's SINPE system recorded a completion rate of 73%. These differences highlight the importance of local payment infrastructure when evaluating the reliability of stablecoin-funded international transfers.

The findings come amid continued growth in stablecoin transaction activity, even as the overall market capitalization of major stablecoins has remained relatively stable. Recent research from Standard Chartered indicated that existing stablecoins are being used more frequently across payment and financial applications, despite slower growth in circulating supply.

The bank also revised its long-term stablecoin market forecast, now expecting total market capitalization to reach $2 trillion by 2030, two years later than previously anticipated. Together, the findings suggest that stablecoin adoption is increasingly being driven by practical payment applications, with lower transaction costs and faster settlement emerging as important advantages for individuals and businesses conducting cross-border transfers.
