Mastercard has introduced a new platform designed to help businesses integrate stablecoin payments into existing banking and card services, expanding its involvement in blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

The service, called Global Money Platform, enables financial institutions and businesses to offer digital currency payment capabilities without having to develop their own stablecoin infrastructure. The platform represents Mastercard's first major integration with BVNK, the stablecoin infrastructure provider it acquired in August.

Mastercard launches Global Money Platform for stablecoin payments

Mastercard's new Global Money Platform brings together traditional currencies and stablecoins within a single payment infrastructure. According to the company, businesses can use the service to hold and exchange fiat currencies and stablecoins, issue payment cards linked to stablecoin balances and facilitate transfers directly into recipients' local bank accounts.

The platform is designed to simplify the integration of digital assets into conventional financial services, allowing companies to offer stablecoin-related products without managing the underlying technical infrastructure themselves. One of its main capabilities is the connection between stablecoin balances and Mastercard's existing payment network, enabling customers to use digital currency holdings for purchases through supported payment cards.

The service also allows businesses to convert stablecoins into traditional currencies when transferring funds to bank accounts, supporting payments across different financial systems.

Mastercard connects stablecoins to global payment infrastructure

Global Money Platform integrates with Mastercard Move, the company's international money transfer network. Mastercard Move supports payment routing to more than 17 billion destinations, including bank accounts and payment cards, providing an established infrastructure for transferring funds across markets.

By connecting stablecoin services to this network, Mastercard aims to make digital currency payments more accessible to businesses and financial service providers. The platform also links stablecoin balances to Mastercard's global merchant acceptance network, allowing users to spend supported digital assets through payment cards.

Several financial technology companies have already joined the initiative as early integration partners, including Nuvei and Marqeta. Their participation could help extend stablecoin payment capabilities to merchants, financial institutions and other businesses using existing fintech services.

The launch also marks a broader expansion of Mastercard's business model, moving beyond traditional payment processing toward providing infrastructure that other financial companies can integrate into their own branded products.

Mastercard and Visa expand competition in stablecoin services

Mastercard's latest initiative comes as competition intensifies among major payment networks seeking to establish a stronger presence in the stablecoin industry. Visa introduced a competing stablecoin platform in July, enabling financial institutions to hold, issue and transfer stablecoins through its infrastructure. Both companies are increasingly developing services that connect blockchain-based assets with established financial networks, allowing businesses to adopt stablecoin payments without relying entirely on cryptocurrency-native platforms.

The expansion comes amid signs that stablecoin transaction activity is growing even as the overall supply of major tokens remains relatively stable. Recent research from Standard Chartered indicated that stablecoins are circulating more frequently across financial applications, despite limited growth in the outstanding supply of leading assets such as Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC.

This suggests that greater stablecoin usage is not necessarily dependent on the issuance of additional tokens, with existing digital currencies increasingly supporting payments, transfers and other transactions. By integrating BVNK's infrastructure with its established payment networks, Mastercard is positioning Global Money Platform to serve businesses seeking to incorporate stablecoins into conventional financial services as adoption continues to develop.
