Elon Musk and Tech Leaders Sign Letter Urging AI Delay

In total, more than 2,600 leading technology leaders, along with Elon Musk and Steven Wozniak, have signed an open letter calling for a halt to AI development. Further development, they say, could bring risks to society and humanity.

The Future of Life Institute (FOLI) is calling for a slowdown in the training of AI systems higher than the latest GPT-4 model, which was made available on 14 March 2023, for at least six months. It became one of the most popular applications immediately after its launch, and its development is gaining momentum. Elon Musk wrote on his own Twitter: "Having a bit of AI existential angst today."

FOLI argues that this rapid progress could have a profound impact on the history of life on earth and warns of a race among AI development firms. Machines could generate propaganda, hoaxes, deep fake and spread untruths, automate all jobs, and generally disrupt the systems in place in society.

Institute also called on governments to engage in a moratorium if their proposal to halt development did not go into immediate effect. This view is not shared by all experts, and they argue that artificial intelligence can move society forward and be beneficial to it.
