Tron Founder Justin Sun Returns From Space

Crypto People 4.8.2025

Justin Sun, founder of the Tron blockchain network, safely returned from a commercial spaceflight aboard Blue Origin’s NS-34 mission on Saturday, accompanied by five other crew members. The flight also included Alpha Funds founder J.D. Russell, entrepreneur Gökhan Erdem, real estate investor Arvi Bahal, meteorologist Deborah Martorell, and philanthropist and teacher Lionel Pitchford.

Sun had secured his seat on the mission by placing a $28 million bid in 2021, becoming the first to reserve a spot on the NS-34 flight.

Reflecting on the experience, Sun said, “Earth is so small, and it's our home. We definitely need to do whatever we can to protect it.” He added, “I was very surprised. Earth is so small. Basically, we could almost see the entire thing from the window, and that’s when it came to me, the mission’s name is right on point.”

His emotional response is consistent with what’s known as the “Overview Effect,” a cognitive shift that astronauts often describe when viewing Earth from space, fostering a deeper sense of interconnectedness and responsibility for the planet.

Meanwhile, several crypto-related initiatives are exploring how blockchain technology can be adapted for use in space. Filecoin, known for its decentralized storage infrastructure, partnered with Lockheed Martin to test the Interplanetary File System (IPFS) in January 2024.

This system enables data transmission between Earth and space via satellites, and the successful demonstration showed that files could be sent to and from space reliably.

Filecoin Foundation president Marta Belcher explained that decentralized storage like IPFS plays a critical role in space communication by reducing latency, ensuring tamper-proof data, and protecting data integrity from the effects of solar radiation, which can damage hardware and corrupt digital information.

In a separate effort, Spacecoin XYZ—a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePin)—launched its first satellite into Earth’s orbit in December 2024. The satellite forms part of a broader plan to build a blockchain-based space communication network.
