Blockchain-based digital payments company Ripple Labs has unveiled its initiative to transform the real estate industry via tokenization.
In a nutshell, tokenization is a data security method in which sensitive data is substituted with non-sensitive elements which are referred to as tokens, which then can be tracked back to the sensitive data through an effective tokenization system.
The innovative pilot program of Ripple Labs is set to explore the practical applications of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and stablecoins with the main focus being on the tokenization of real estate assets. In specific, according to the use case presented by Ripple Labs CBDC advisor Antony Welfare during a fintech conference in Romania, the pilot program aims at allowing users to tokenize real estate assets and use them as collateral for loans.
The beforementioned initiative shall incorporate the digital Hong Kong dollar (e-HKD), tokenized real estate and practical finance lending protocols. In a July 7 tweet, Welfare noted that CBDCs “are gaining traction globally” and that the Ripple CBDC team is focused on exploring “real world cases for a CBDC or stablecoin.”
What’s in it for Ripple? According to Welfare, a scalable solution shall leverage the CBDC platform of Ripple, which he regards as a secure, private, permissioned ledger.
