This news was reported by Bahamas Attorney General Ryan Pinder, which stated that Bankman-Fried was arrested by the Royal Bahamas Police Force for there were criminal charges against the FTX founder filed by the Southern District Court of New York. Bankman-Fried faces potential extradition to the U.S..
The 30 year old former-CEO of the second largest crypto exchange had also reportedly refused to testify at a Senate Banking Committee hearing on Wednesday over the FTX collapse. He had resigned as CEO on the same day as the bankruptcy filing. He tried to downplay accusation of fraud, and also spent and traded customer funds through his trading firm Alameda Research. Estimate of at least $1 billion worth of customer funds are unaccounted for and there are no indications of when they will be able to withdraw their money.
The fall of FTX led to bankruptcy of several companies that were exposed to FTX, including lenders BlockFi and Voyager Digital. Moreover, in the past year, the crypto market has lost two thirds of its market capitalization because of the rising interest rates and heightened scrutiny of the space.
