United States president-elect Ron DeSantis, currently the governor of the state of Florida, has vowed to “protect” Bitcoin (BTC) if he becomes elected as U.S. president.

On May 24, Twitter CEO Elon Musk joined DeSantis in a live Twitter broadcast which honed more than 520,000 live listeners, and the Florida governor did not hesitate to show his willingness to incorporate cryptocurrency in the daily lives of the American people: “As president, we’ll protect the ability to do things like Bitcoin.”

He also added that “there’s risks involved with it,” but that the people who are interested in crypto are rather “sophisticated” and “can make decisions.” In May, DeSantis passed an anti-central bank digital currency (CBDC) bill in Florida which disallows the use of a federal CBDC as money, alongside banning the use of non-American CBDCs.

In his vow to protect Bitcoin, DeSantis expressed that lawmakers are increasing regulatory scrutiny over cryptocurrencies and “the bureaucracy”, likely referring to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), is indulging in initiatives which make it hard for people to operate in the crypto space:

“I just don’t have an itch to have to control everything that people may be doing in this space, and I think that the current regime — clearly they have it out for Bitcoin.”
