FBI Accuses North Korea for Stealing $100 million in Harmony Crypto Hack
The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has revealed its conclusions concerning the exploitation just eight months after the fatal attack on Harmony Bridge. The law enforcement agency confirmed Lazarus Group, a North Korean cybercrime squad, and APT38 as the architects of the exploitation.
The FBI investigation revealed that both hacker organizations collaborated to exploit the bridge and steal 100 million USD in digital assets. Hackers transferred around 64 million USD of the stolen cash a few days ago using RAILGUN, an Ethereum-based anonymity protocol.
After finding that the hackers were attempting to launder the stolen assets through Huobi, renowned cryptocurrency exchange Binance blocked the move. As a result, an undisclosed portion of the stolen assets was recovered.
The FBI has now confirmed the recovery of a portion of the cash and thanked virtual asset service providers for their assistance in freezing the monetary assets. The agency confirmed that the remaining Bitcoin was then transferred to several locations.
Harmony was exploited in June of last year. In August, the FBI advised investors to conduct thorough research before investing in DeFi platforms. In addition, the agency recommended DeFi platforms to improve their security by enhancing monitoring and undertaking severe code testing, and it encouraged them to hire private auditors to examine their codes.
In recent efforts to combat escalating exploitation, the FBI established a crypto crime team in February 2022 to track and freeze illicit coins. The team must assess crypto crime situations that require more resources for appropriate investigation.
