Elon Musk, the entrepreneur behind SpaceX, Tesla, and X, is embroiled in a legal conflict with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, over allegations that OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft breaches their original nonprofit agreement.

Musk's lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of California for the County of San Francisco, accuses OpenAI of straying from its mission to advance open-source artificial general intelligence (AGI) for humanity's benefit.

He alleges contract breach, fiduciary duty violation, and unfair competition, urging OpenAI to adhere to its open-source commitments and seeking an injunction against the profit-driven use of AGI technology.

Musk criticizes the release of ChatGPT-4 in March 2023 as a departure from OpenAI's open principles, benefiting Microsoft financially at the expense of the nonprofit's original mission.

OpenAI, co-founded by Musk, transitioned from a nonprofit to a commercial entity in 2020, leading to concerns over its focus on profitability over societal benefit.

Despite generating over $2 billion in annual revenue, Musk remains a vocal critic of OpenAI's direction, advocating for stringent AI regulation and a technically knowledgeable board to guide AGI development responsibly.
