What is Aave?

Aave is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that enables users to lend and borrow cryptocurrencies without relying on a central authority. Founded by Stani Kulechov in 2017 under the name ETHLend, it rebranded to Aave in 2018, with "Aave" meaning "ghost" in Finnish, symbolizing its mission to create an open and transparent financial system. Operating primarily on the Ethereum blockchain, Aave utilizes smart contracts to automate lending and borrowing processes, ensuring security and efficiency. Its native token, AAVE, serves multiple functions within the ecosystem, including governance participation, staking for protocol security, and fee reductions for users.

How is Aave useful?

Aave offers a decentralized platform where users can earn interest on their digital assets by supplying liquidity or borrow assets by providing collateral. This system eliminates the need for traditional financial intermediaries, granting users greater control over their funds. Aave introduced innovative features such as "flash loans," which allow users to borrow assets without collateral, provided the loan is repaid within the same transaction block. This facilitates advanced financial strategies like arbitrage and collateral swapping. Additionally, Aave supports a wide range of cryptocurrencies and operates across multiple blockchain networks, enhancing its accessibility and utility in the DeFi space.

How does Aave work?

Aave operates through smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain and other supported networks. Users can deposit supported cryptocurrencies into liquidity pools, earning interest based on the demand for those assets. Borrowers can access these pools by providing collateral that exceeds the amount they wish to borrow, ensuring the protocol's security through overcollateralization. Interest rates are determined algorithmically, adjusting based on the utilization rate of each asset in the pool. The protocol's governance is decentralized, with AAVE token holders proposing and voting on changes, ensuring that the community directs its evolution.
