On Thursday, gold reached an all-time high of $4,357 per ounce, pushing its total market capitalization beyond $30 trillion for the first time. This marks a major milestone not only for gold itself but also for global financial markets that have long regarded it as a safe-haven asset.
The market capitalization of bitcoin currently stands at around $2.1 trillion, meaning gold is roughly 14.5 times larger. For comparison, gold’s total value is 1.5× higher than the combined market capitalization of the “Magnificent 7” — Nvidia, Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Tesla — together worth around $20 trillion.
Unlike stocks, gold’s market capitalization is not based on the number of shares issued but rather on the estimated total value of all gold ever mined. While the exact quantity is unknown, its valuation underscores how strongly investors continue to trust this metal.
Since the start of 2025, gold has gained 64% in value, driven by a weaker dollar, rising geopolitical tensions, and growing fears of trade wars. In times of uncertainty, investors traditionally turn to gold as a “store of value.”
Many analysts, however, believe that once the gold market cools, some of that capital could move into bitcoin, often dubbed “digital gold.” “Gold added over $300 billion in market cap today,” noted crypto analyst Sykodelic. “That’s about the same as the entire bitcoin market in just one week.” Venture investor Joe Consorti added: “If bitcoin manages to decouple from U.S. equities amid geopolitical tensions while gold inflows slow, it could be the trade of the year.”
Analyst Merlijn the Trader highlighted a key trend: “Global M2 money supply is rising, gold is soaring, but bitcoin is still sleeping. This divergence never lasts — liquidity always finds its way to risk. The next bitcoin rally will be brutal.” Since the beginning of the year, bitcoin has risen 16%, still about 14% below its all-time high. While it remains quiet for now, many investors see it as the potential winner of the next cycle.
