Most Crypto Exploits in 2023 Occurred in September
With a staggering $329.8 million in cryptocurrency stolen in September, it is now official that 2023's worst month (so far) for crypto-related exploits.
On October 2, blockchain security company CertiK stated that the Mixin Network attack on September 23—during which the Hong Kong-based decentralized cross-chain transfer protocol lost $200 million as a result of a breach of its cloud service provider—was the major contributor to the month's totals.
The attacks on the CoinEx exchange and Stake.com, which cost $53 million and $41 million in losses, respectively, were other significant events for the month.
Both attacks have been attributed to the Lazarus Group, a North Korean hacker group. According to the most recent data from Dune Analytics, the group has $45.6 million worth of cryptocurrency assets.
The attack increased the amount of cryptocurrency lost to exploits in a single year to $925.4 million. With $285.8 million stolen, July ranked as the second-highest month for exploit losses.
According to CertiK, the month also saw losses of $1.9 million from exit scams, $400,000 from flash loan attacks, and an additional $25 million from phishing attacks.
The total amount lost in 2023 as a result of exploits, scams, and hacks is now $1.34 billion.
The third quarter of 2023 saw just under $890 million in total losses as a result of hacks, phishing scams, and exit scams, according to blockchain security company Beosin.
Beosin reported late last week that losses in Q3 even exceeded the sum of the first two quarters, which was $330 million in Q1 and $333 million in Q2.
