India, the world’s fastest-growing major economy, is preparing to enter the era of digital currencies. The government announced plans to soon launch a digital rupee supported by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The new digital currency aims to make payments faster and more efficient both domestically and internationally.
“India has announced that it will introduce a digital currency backed by the RBI, just like traditional money,” said Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal during a roundtable in Doha, Qatar. According to him, the digital rupee will use Blockchain technology, enabling faster, safer, and more transparent transactions.
Goyal compared the system to stablecoins, which were legalized in the United States earlier this year through the GENIUS Act (Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act). Like stablecoins, India’s digital currency will maintain stability thanks to government backing.
One of the main advantages of the new currency will be its ability to better track and verify all transactions. Every payment will be recorded on the Blockchain network, helping to combat money laundering and other illicit activities.
“The new system will help reduce illegal transactions since every digital payment can be verified,” Goyal emphasized.
Although India ranks among global leaders in cryptocurrency adoption, according to Chainalysis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government remains cautious toward private cryptocurrencies.
“We do not support cryptocurrencies without sovereign backing or asset collateral,” Goyal explained, noting that bitcoin operates without any official guarantee of value — a key risk that prevents broader acceptance.
If the plan is successfully implemented, India could become one of the largest markets for central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) worldwide. With over a billion citizens and a rapidly growing digital economy, the digital rupee could transform domestic payment infrastructure and international trade.
