Australia is emerging as a global leader in crypto adoption, according to new data from venture fund Andreessen Horowitz (a16z crypto). The report shows that Australians have the highest per-capita interest in digital assets worldwide. By next year, nearly half of the country’s population — 41% — is expected to be involved with cryptocurrencies in some way.
Data from CoinGecko reveal that Australians generate the highest share of cryptocurrency token traffic globally — 74.63% per one billion people. South Korea ranks second with 73.48%, followed by the United Kingdom with 62.15%.
Surprisingly, the United States — traditionally viewed as the center of crypto innovation — trails behind, with just 40.73% of traffic coming from token-related activity.
The a16z crypto report also highlights a key difference between investors in developed and emerging economies. While users from advanced markets like Australia and the UK focus mainly on trading and speculation, those in developing regions engage more in on-chain activity — directly using crypto via mobile wallets and decentralized apps.
Australians’ enthusiasm for cryptocurrency is also reshaping the economy. Analysts at Statista project that the Australian crypto market will grow at an annual rate of 19.85%, reaching 1.2 billion AUD (around 780 million USD) by 2026.
The user base is expected to expand to 11.16 million people, meaning that more than four in ten Australians will be actively involved in crypto — whether through investing, trading, or holding digital assets.
Australia is confirming the broader global trend of younger generations leading the charge into digital assets. Interest in crypto is no longer confined to tech enthusiasts but is becoming a mainstream investment strategy. If projections hold true, by 2026 Australia will be among the world’s most crypto-native economies, where cryptocurrency is a natural part of daily financial life.
